COMPREHENSIVE CRISIS MANAGEMENT
Crisis Mitigation & Prevention-Preparedness-Response-Recovery
This is a full two-day workshop on comprehensive emergency management response team training for district teams, building level teams, and community providers. Suggested participants are principals, assistant principals, counselors, psychologists, teachers, social workers, nurses, bus transportation directors, and family resource center staff. Suggested community providers are police (State, County, City), fire department, EMS, hospital emergency or social services, disaster services, mental health. This workshop is based upon a comprehensive emergency management planning and staff development manual written by Dr. Judy Keith. Protocols for the development of building level emergency management plans and district policy and procedures manuals may also be purchased.
Participants in this workshop should bring a copy of their existing crisis response plan and a floor plan of their building.
OBJECTIVES
Participants will be able to:

Describe the rationale for having a emergency management team in each building.

Identify members to serve on the team and their role during emergencies.
|
 |
Identify community providers and their role during crisis response.
|
 |
Establish cooperative relationships with feeder schools.
|
 |
Discuss issues related to communication, security, and problems identified through an environmental safety/readiness survey.
|
 |
Critique or initiate the process of creating a building-specific emergency plan for all types of events including terrorism, natural disasters, weapons, deaths, etc.
|
 |
Brainstorm lock down and evacuation procedures.
|
 |
Evaluate and update building floor plan.
|
 |
Verify information.
|
 |
Establish incident command center.
|
 |
Communicate with parents and the media.
|
 |
Communicate with feeder schools.
|
 |
Hold staff meeting before school - (principle of triage, announcements, rumors, student activities, quiet rooms, daily schedule changes).
|
 |
Manage rumors.
|
 |
Make changes in daily schedule and return to normal schedule.
|
 |
Establish quiet rooms and support groups.
|
 |
Clarify appropriate steps to defuse a situation so that emotions do not get out of control.
|
 |
Write and make announcements to staff, students, parents.
|
 |
Conduct table top drills in emergency management - first 30 minutes of an event.
|
 |
Describe the purpose and process of critical incident stress debriefing as it fits within the comprehensive crisis management model.
|
 |
Describe the normal and abnormal grief process in adults and children.
|
 |
Identify appropriate helping behaviors for assisting the emotional wounded.
|
 |
Debrief staff and crisis team at the end of the day.
|
 |
Organize and conduct parent and community meetings.
|
 |
Assess and prioritize steps team members need to take following the workshop to improve their comprehensive emergency management program.
